According to a recent report, people tend to gain anywhere between one and three pounds during the holiday season. With so much delicious food laying around and not as many opportunities to exercise as you would normally have during the summer months, it may feel inevitable that your diet is going to begin to slide. However, while this weight gain may seem small, it can lead to an increase in cholesterol, blood pressure, insulin, and blood sugar levels and can cause increased pressure in joints.
While a little cheating is ok every once in a while, it is important to make healthy food choices throughout the year, even during the holiday season. Luckily, there are plenty of great alternatives to our favorite holiday dishes so that you can still have a tasty treat while maintaining a healthy diet. Below are some of our favorite ways to indulge without the bulge!
Swap potatoes for sweet potatoes
For many Americans, potatoes make up a substantial part of holiday meals and are generally considered a healthy addition to any diet. However, depending on how they are cooked, these versatile root vegetables aren’t always the easiest on our waistlines. Thankfully, a slightly healthier alternative lies in the naturally-sweet, and aptly-named, sweet potato.
Although they share a similar name, potatoes and sweet potatoes are only distantly related. While both are rich in fiber, potassium, and Vitamins B6 and A, the humble sweet potato edges out its more popular cousin when it comes to Vitamin A and beta carotene which help protect your body’s cells from damage and disease. Just remember that food is only as healthy as what you cook it with so make sure to use oils and fats sparingly.
Replace sugary drinks with sparkling water
Juices, sodas, and alcoholic drinks are often the norm at holiday functions. However, these are loaded with sugar and calories that can quickly pack on the pounds. Rather than reaching for the closest sugary drink at your next holiday function, opt for sparkling water. The bubbles provide the same refreshing feeling as soda without all of the chemicals or sugar. If you simply can’t resist indulging in either sugary drinks or alcohol during the holiday, try to replace at least some portion of your drink with sparkling water. It combines perfectly with orange or apple juice or with gin or vodka to create a low-calorie drink that hits the spot!
Switch pork with chicken
Pork products are notoriously high in fat but many people may not know that they are up to 71% higher in calories than chicken. If that’s not enough to make you want to do a little swap, chicken also packs in significantly more protein and has less sugar than sausage. Chicken can be used in some of your favorite holiday recipes and is a much healthier alternative to ham, bacon, or sausage.
Create your own stuffing mix
Many pre-made stuffing mixes contain excess salt and preservatives which makes them very unhealthy. Rather than using one of these, try making your own stuffing mix using deliciously healthy ingredients such as wholemeal bread, chestnuts, herbs, rice, and onions. You can also throw in dried fruits or nuts to give it an extra splash of flavor without a lot of calories.
Go nuts
Potato chips are often the go-to option when you are feeling a little hungry before dinner and need a snack. However, potato chips are loaded with salt and oil that are unhealthy for your heart and your waistline. Instead, try and reach for a handful of nuts. Full of protein and vitamins, these are much more diet-friendly than chips and will help you feel full longer. Nuts are very high in calories so much sure you don’t overdo it though!
Ready to celebrate?
As you can see, you can easily swap some ingredients around this holiday season to enjoy the holiday feast while still maintaining your diet. These dietary changes can be incorporated into your day all year long!
